Hot tub rules in Woodstock
Every municipality sets its own rules for hot tubs. This is what the City of Woodstock publishes:
- A hot tub with a lockable cover does not need a swimming pool enclosure permit; one without a lockable cover does.
- To be exempt from the fence requirement, the hot tub must be secured by a rigid cover with a locking device, kept in place when the tub is not in use.
- The cover needs a locking mechanism on each portion that opens.
- A hot tub without such a cover must be inside a pool enclosure at least 1.5 metres (5 feet) high.
- These rules are in Chapter 722 of the City’s Municipal Code.

The cover that comes with an Arctic Spa is rigid, locks, and meets ASTM Standard F1346-91 — the safety-cover standard several Ontario municipalities name. Ask your showroom for the cover’s specifications if your municipality wants them with a permit application.
Separately, anywhere in Ontario: electrical work you hire out must be done by a Licensed Electrical Contractor, who files the notification of work with the Electrical Safety Authority. Every spa needs a GFCI breaker. See our site preparation guide for the electrical supply each spa needs.

Common questions
Do I need a permit for a hot tub in Woodstock?
Not if it has a lockable cover. The City of Woodstock requires a swimming pool enclosure permit only for a hot tub without one. The cover must be rigid, lock on each portion that opens, and be kept in place when the tub is not in use. Rules change, so confirm with the City of Woodstock before you install.
