Hot tub rules in Waterloo

Every municipality sets its own rules for hot tubs. This is what the City of Waterloo publishes:

  • You need a pool or hot tub enclosure permit from the City of Waterloo when you install a new hot tub or swim spa.
  • If the hot tub or swim spa has a lockable lid that meets ASTM Standard F1346-91, you still need the permit, but the City charges no fee for it.
  • The lid must stay locked whenever the hot tub or swim spa is not in use.
  • Without a qualifying lockable lid, the permit carries a fee and the tub needs an enclosure.

The cover that comes with an Arctic Spa is rigid, locks, and meets ASTM Standard F1346-91 — the safety-cover standard several Ontario municipalities name. Ask your showroom for the cover’s specifications if your municipality wants them with a permit application.

Separately, anywhere in Ontario: electrical work you hire out must be done by a Licensed Electrical Contractor, who files the notification of work with the Electrical Safety Authority. Every spa needs a GFCI breaker. See our site preparation guide for the electrical supply each spa needs.
