Hot tub rules in Stratford

Every municipality sets its own rules for hot tubs. This is what the City of Stratford publishes:

A permit is required to install a hot tub that can hold water more than 0.9 metres (about 3 feet) deep.
A hot tub, whirlpool or spa must be fitted with a tight-fitted cover with a locking device, or be protected by a fence at least 1.52 metres high.
These rules are in the City’s Fence and Hedge By-law 128-2003.

Source: City of Stratford — Building (projects that require a permit), read October 2026. Municipal rules and fees change — confirm with the City of Stratford before you install. This is a summary, not legal advice.

The cover that comes with an Arctic Spa is rigid, locks, and meets ASTM Standard F1346-91 — the safety-cover standard several Ontario municipalities name. Ask your showroom for the cover’s specifications if your municipality wants them with a permit application.

Separately, anywhere in Ontario: electrical work you hire out must be done by a Licensed Electrical Contractor, who files the notification of work with the Electrical Safety Authority. Every spa needs a GFCI breaker. See our site preparation guide for the electrical supply each spa needs.
