Hot tub rules in St. Thomas

Every municipality sets its own rules for hot tubs. This is what the City of St. Thomas publishes:

A hot tub with a locking lid does not require a swimming pool fence, and therefore does not require a permit.
The City’s Swimming Pool Fence By-law 56-2011 (amended by 162-2020) excludes a hot tub, whirlpool or spa with a lockable lid from its swimming pool rules.
For a hot tub without a locking lid, ask Building Services at (519) 633-2560 before you install.

The cover that comes with an Arctic Spa is rigid, locks, and meets ASTM Standard F1346-91 — the safety-cover standard several Ontario municipalities name. Ask your showroom for the cover’s specifications if your municipality wants them with a permit application.

Separately, anywhere in Ontario: electrical work you hire out must be done by a Licensed Electrical Contractor, who files the notification of work with the Electrical Safety Authority. Every spa needs a GFCI breaker. See our site preparation guide for the electrical supply each spa needs.
