Hot tub rules in Cambridge

Every municipality sets its own rules for hot tubs. This is what the City of Cambridge publishes:

  • You must apply for a permit before installing any hot tub that can hold water 76.2 cm (30 inches) deep or more at any point.
  • At final approval a By-law Officer inspects the installation.
  • The hot tub must be enclosed by a fence that complies with the City’s Fence By-law, or have a lockable lid.
  • The inspection also checks that gates are lockable and that the hot tub meets the required setbacks from property lines.

The cover that comes with an Arctic Spa is rigid, locks, and meets ASTM Standard F1346-91 — the safety-cover standard several Ontario municipalities name. Ask your showroom for the cover’s specifications if your municipality wants them with a permit application.

Separately, anywhere in Ontario: electrical work you hire out must be done by a Licensed Electrical Contractor, who files the notification of work with the Electrical Safety Authority. Every spa needs a GFCI breaker. See our site preparation guide for the electrical supply each spa needs.
